Recently, my sister's boyfriend and I decided to tackle the Humpback Rocks trail. It’s a relatively short hike at just 1.8 miles, but don't let that fool you—this trail proved to be more challenging than we expected! While my sister’s boyfriend joked about his calves being on fire, I have to admit, my legs felt the burn too. There are plenty of steep inclines and a good amount of rock scrambling, but once we made it to the top, the breathtaking view made every bit of effort worthwhile.
What to Bring on This Hike
Before you head out on the Humpback Rocks trail, be sure to pack the essentials. Here’s what I recommend based on our experience:
- Water: Definitely bring cold water with you! There are several points along the trail where you'll want to stop and take a drink, especially during warmer weather. I recommend packing water in an insulated bottle to keep it cool throughout the hike.
- Bear Mace: It's always better to be safe than sorry when hiking in nature, so consider bringing bear mace, just in case.
- Flashlight: If you're planning to hike during dusk or early morning, a flashlight would be helpful. We went during the day, so we didn’t need one, but it’s a smart idea if you’re hiking in lower light conditions.
- Lunch: The view from the top is stunning, and if you’d like to enjoy it a bit longer, consider packing a lunch. There’s something so satisfying about sitting down to eat with such a beautiful vantage point.
What to Wear on This Hike
When it comes to gear, hiking shoes are an absolute must on this trail. The rock scrambles are long and challenging, and you can easily slip or fall if you’re not prepared. I highly recommend shoes with ankle protection to avoid any injuries on the rougher sections of the hike.
We went in the fall, but the weather was surprisingly warm, so we opted for hiking shorts and T-shirts, which worked perfectly. If you're hiking during cooler months, be sure to check the forecast and layer up, but for warm weather, breathable clothing is key.
How Was the Hike?
To be honest, the hike was tougher than I initially thought, but in a good way. The rock scrambles were fun but definitely challenging—be prepared for a solid workout! One of the highlights of the hike was how many adorable dogs we saw along the trail. It seems like a popular spot for hikers with their pups, which added a bit of extra joy to the trek.
Once you reach Humpback Rocks, the view is nothing short of amazing! The vantage point offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, and it’s the kind of scenery that takes your breath away. There were a lot of people on the rocks, which is typical for the fall season, but it didn’t detract from the experience. It’s the kind of view that makes every tough scramble and burning muscle worth it.
How Would I Rate This Hike?
I’d say this hike is challenging but incredibly rewarding. It’s not the longest hike, but the intensity of the rock scrambles makes it feel like quite the adventure. I’d rate it a solid 9 out of 10
As we made our way back to the parking area, I definitely felt the burn, but it was one of those satisfying feelings—you know, the kind that makes you feel like you really earned the view you just enjoyed.
I’d recommend this hike to anyone, but particularly to those who are relatively fit or used to hiking tougher terrain. It’s a challenge, but it’s so worth it!
